One of the most difficult phases in anyone's life is the time one has to make a choice - a choice which could have serious ramifications. Like choosing a house to buy, or choosing a life partner, or deciding a career path.
For my target readers, who have kids around the age of 8-10 years old, another such decision point is 11+ for Secondary school for your kids. And also, questions like the 11+ conundrum, whats 11+ GL exam, how do GL and CEM types differ?
Statistics show that Grammar schools are known for their focus on academic excellence. They often have a strong track record of academic achievement and can provide a more academically rigorous curriculum. Students attending grammar schools generally have higher average exam results and higher progression rates to higher education institutions.
Therefore, whilst getting to a good Grammar school is tough, once in, the chances of the child doing well professionally, are greater. Every parent aspires to see their children succeed. And with arguably the most important 5 years spent in a good training ground, the child benefits from not only good curriculum and delivery, but also good peers and network developed over these 5 years.
Now, to the 2nd part - is 11+ something which can be tutored? 11+ will test your child in aptitude. It includes:
English: The English section may include reading comprehension exercises, grammar and punctuation questions, and sometimes a written composition or essay.
Mathematics: The mathematics section assesses mathematical reasoning, problem-solving abilities, arithmetic, number patterns, and basic algebra and geometry concepts.
Verbal Reasoning: This section evaluates a student's ability to understand and manipulate language, including tasks such as identifying analogies, completing word patterns, and solving verbal puzzles.
Non-Verbal Reasoning: Non-verbal reasoning questions assess a student's ability to solve problems using visual patterns, logic, and spatial awareness. These questions often involve shapes, figures, and sequences.
The topics are usually part of school curricula, but the test taking ability is something every child can improve. Like learning to drive a car, there is a process and there is an output. Similarly 11+ coaching can help improve the chances of your child passing the 11+ with flying colours.
Tutoring provides personalised guidance, helps students identify their strengths and areas for improvement, and offers strategies to tackle the different sections of the exam effectively. It also provides practice materials, offers mock tests, and provides feedback to help students refine their skills and improve their performance.
I'll discuss the types of 11+ in my next blog
